At Architecture, over 60 staff members are involved in (PhD-) research under the departmental research program The Architectural Project and its Foundations. The program is built upon six research groups, where researchers from different chairs share and reflect upon content and approaches of their work.
As a consequence, PhD researchers at the Department benefit from a threefold supervision. First and foremost by the professor who supervises their work. Subsequently from the day to day involvement in the activities of the chair they are part of. And finally, the occasional discussions within the research groups.
Applications from both PhD candidates and short term guest researchers are welcomed. We are keen to treat all applications equally and therefore we ask you fillin the online PhD application form.
The department is not in the financial position to fund PhD students. If this information doesn’t turn you down and in the event of a positive assessment of your application, do know there are possibilities in The Netherlands to acquire a scholarship. The following sources may be useful:
You may have been granted a scholarship already and in search of a host university, or you are about to secure the funding for your PhD track. In any of these cases, Delft University of Technology will require that a candidate PhD student proves that a scholarship provides a monthly living allowance of 1250 euro, at least. An inadequate scholarship, replenished with additional means to meet this minimum, is allowed, but should be accompanied by a budget and signed letter by which you declare to be self-supporting.
In case you foresee your research interest complies more with the work done in one of the faculties or other departments, please visit the research page of the faculty to find all research programmes.
The university has a webpage with information for candidate PhD researchers.
If you still have questions after reading this section and the next pages on the admission procedure, administrative matters, or any other matter concerning PhD research, please contact Prof.dr. Tom Avermaete or Prof.dr.ing. Carola Hein, Research Coordinators for the Department of Architecture.
