prof. ir. Kees Duijvestein (1943) has been a full professor of Environmental Design at the faculty since 1992. He conducts research into the spatial quality of buildings in relation to social, economic and environmental aspects, which involves for example the question of how we can produce attractive, affordable and environmentally friendly housing. He conceives structures and makes design sketches that can be used for new building projects. Duijvestein also uses his research and teaching in response to current topics, such as how various issues like building fraud or problems of fine particles can be prevented in the future by building more sustainably. As a scientist he believes it important to integrate the general worldwide discussion on sustainability into his work at the faculty. His field of scientific interest extends across the whole spectrum of the theme of sustainable construction: from energy, the use of waste and materials, and affordability to water and mobility, quality of life and health.

On top of his work for the faculty, he is the founder and director of BOOM-Duijvestein bv, (BOOM = Bureau voor Onderzoek en Ontwerp voor het Milieu (environmental research and design company)), where he was involved with the plans for the Ecodus and Ecolonia ecological residential districts in Delft and Alphen aan den Rijn respectively. He is also a regular on the Quality Teams, for example for large-scale housing projects like Vathorst in Amersfoort. He is the chairman of the Board of Supervisory Directors of the Real Estate fund of the Triodos Bank.
