A1 Theories and strategies for Sustainable urban Development
Conceptual frames for Sustainable urban Development (A1)

Programme: - (to be determined)
Since the Brundtland report and the 1992 UN Conference on Development and environment in Rio, the concept of Sustainable Development has gained worldwide acceptance. The implications for architecture and urban and regional planning remain unclear, however, as the Brundtland Committee's People, Planet and Profit (PPP) criteria do not explicitly address spatial quality issues. The research project seeks to throw light on the links between PPP and concepts such as flows, areas and actors, which emerged from design and planning debates concerning ecologically sound urban Development.
This is an ongoing project.

A2 Sustainable innovation and Architecture
Researchers: ir. P.G. Teeuw PDEng, drs. ing. G. de Vries
Programme: Sustainability (TM&T 006)
What’s the meaning of Sustainable innovation for architecture? The research focuses on how, by means of architects, a Sustainable innovation (to achieve Sustainable Development) for the built environment can be stimulated and the other way around what we can learn from innovative architects to achieve sustainable solutions. Questions to be discussed are: if conditions change (for example the climate change), will the method of design change; are ‘success factors’ really successful; are Sustainable projects in practice really Sustainable; are Sustainable techniques in practice really Sustainable; how to keep knowledge/information up-to-date, how to direct (architects) effectively, how to spread innovations effective.
