  • Hans Albarda: Off grid living in Canada

June 10th, Lunch lecture, 12:45-13:45, Berlagezaal

Hans Albarda lived off-grid, using only renewable sustainable energy since 1971.Some people might call him a pioneer. But he is more interested in the growing movement toward clean living. In very many ways, Canada is a very backward country, it is primitive and you might want to know what is (or is not) happening in Canada in the field of sustainable building.

The primary career of Hans Albarda has not involved sustainable living technologies. He studied visual art in Toronto and became a teaching professor in Ontario. The use and interest of renewable energy and sustainable living happened by itself. After graduating he was too poor to be able to buy electricity, so he just decided to make his own. He lived “off-grid” ever since, feeling really happy about his independent lifestyle and clean living. His latest house is solar powered and uses biomass and geothermal energy.

This lecture will be a story about his personal experiences in Canada using renewable energy, involving all the struggles and some success. Also some examples of others who have succeeded in small projects will be shown.

The lecture will take place on the 10th of June, 12h45 till 13h45, in the Berlagezaal of the Faculty of Architecture.

Both courses can be followed simultaneously. During three additional meetings the course-specific tasks connected to the lectures series will be discussed.
AR0913 looks into the role of the architect in the existing sustainable city. The task will result in an essay.
AR0083 (TiDO) discusses the question of which target group is less easily made enthusiastic about how to deal with the sustainable housing assignment within the existing city and which tools are to be used. Urban ecology will be one of examined themes. The task consists of two parts: a take-home exam about urban ecology and an essay.

  • Sustainablabla Conference, Van Concept tot Realisatie

    September 30th - October 2nd

(Both description and conference are only available in Dutch)

  • Workshop at SASBE2009: Sustain BK City!

June 17th, a Sustainablabla workshop in the Aula TU Delft

On June 17 the Sustainablabla!? committee organises, in cooperation with SASBE2009, a workshop at the TU Aula. The case: the brand new building of the Faculty of Architecture: BK City.
There are a lot of questions about how sustainable the building is:
does the fancy furniture and bright colours give right to the same sustainable concept as the paper sandwich packages at the Ketelhuis? How are the Glass Houses cooled in the summer? What happens with waste water?
