Graduation in Technology in Sustainable Development

Students from all faculties of the Delft University of Technology can opt for a graduation in
Technology in Sustainable Development (TiSD, or TiDO in Dutch) and will receive a special appendix to their regular Master diploma. For architectural engineers this means that during the master some demands have to be met:

1. At least 10 ECTS of sustainable development related courses in the free choice
2. Follow a TU central colloquium of two weeks (wm0939TU) for 5 ECTS offered twice a year
3. Sustainable Development as a central element in the graduation project

Once the above mentioned demands have been met a student may obtain a signature granting the appendix if:

  • the graduation project was mentored by a TiSD / TiDO approved tutor, or one tutoring on behalf of a TiSD / TiDO co-ordinator;
  • the graduation project is submitted upon completion for approval by a TiSD / TiDO co-ordinator. This course of action is not a guaranteed success and is therefor strongly discouraged;

Students who finished the specialization successfully, have specialised themselves recognizably in sustainable development, environment and technology, in such a way that they are able to:

  • analyse effectively complex situations in which contrary interests play a role;
  • control the main methods used in their technical discipline with which environmental and sustainability problems are solved;
  • consider technological options to solve sustainability questions and to weigh these against each other;
  • indicate which organisational social changes result from the chosen options;
  • formulate new technological options and to review these options on their effectiveness (technical, economical and social).

1. At least 10 ECTS of sustainable development related courses in the free choice

2. Follow a TU central colloquium of two weeks for 5 ECTS (wm0939TU) offered twice a year

The first part is a full-time week which takes place on a boat where guest lectures and workshops are held. In the second part - which is spread over about 6 weeks - students are asked to develop approaches to solve the sustainability problems. In interdisciplinary groups they focus on one subject, for example: water, energy, industry, transport, etc. There is room for about 25 students, so sign up in time.

To apply for this colloquium, the so-called Bootweek, and for the latest information we kindly refer you to the general TiDO / TiSD website: Specialisation TiSD

3. Sustainable Development as a central element in the graduation project

Within a number of studios sustainability is an integral part of the course. Notably RMITArchitectural EngineeringSADDDwelling and Explore Lab offer such studios. Still, it is advisable to contact each studio co-ordinator and to ask specifically for their TiDO/TiSD tutor.

Other studios on offer may also be eligible for an TiDO/TiSD appendix, but again, students should always contact each studio co-ordinator and ask about graduating with a TiDO/TiSD appendix.
Once the studio co-ordinator and the TiDO/TiSD tutor have established an 25% sustainable contribution to the final project, students are required to hand in a form specifying all of the above mentioned requisites to obtain their TiSD/TiDO appendix.

This form can be obtained here or here, along with additional information.
After acceptance an additional TiSD/TiDO certificate will be rewarded at the graduation.
