MSc 1/2 Design Studio

RESET/RESTORE | Rotterdam

Everywhere around us there are examples of apartment buildings that seem to have outlived their natural lives. They have deteriorated into a pitiful state and do not comply with present day life style demands. Yet, simply tearing down these buildings is no longer a preferred solution. From the point of view of sustainability, attempts should be made to salvage and reuse them.

Reset / Restore aims to investigate the possibility of reusing and reprogramming a defunct apartment building. At the corner of the Westzeedijk and the Schiedamsedijk in Rotterdam, an area called Vasteland, several buildings offer themselves for an intensive make-over.

The design assignment of the Dwelling studio ‘Reset / Restore’ is to transform and reprogram one of the Vasteland apartment buildings into a contemporary icon of living in the heart of Rotterdam. Central to the assignment is the relationship between program, space, load baring structure and services. How do modern life styles differ from those of the past, which spatial organizations cater for these life styles and how are they to be reconciled with the existing structure and services? Students may add building volume to the existing structure, or even chose to design a whole new building next to the old one.

All MSc 1&2 Dwelling students will take part in the Master Class Dwelling Design, taught by Prof. Dick van Gameren
MSc 1 Dwelling students are strongly encouraged to also enrol in Architectural Studies (AR1AD030) and Architectural Reflections (AR1AD040)

SEMINARS

The seminars Architectural Studies (AR1Ad030) and Architectural Reflections (AR1Ad040) are strongly connected to the design studio. It is recommended to enroll these courses, which focus on the analysis of relevant projects and texts thus providing tools for the design work in the studio. The research in the seminars is linked to the research programme of the chair and its publication series Delft Architectural Studies on Housing (DASH).
