CHARGING ROTTERDAM!
European cities are facing the challenge to develop a strong identity and to position themselves smartly in relation to neighbouring cities. So does Rotterdam. In the future vision ‘Rotterdam, Gateway to Europe’ the city presents itself not only as a port, but also as a hotbed for the creative industries (architecture, design, media and music) and as a pleasant, differentiated residential area.
The neighbourhood of Bospolder-Tussendijken (sub-counsel Delfshaven) is one of Rotterdam’s economically deprived areas. Its main problems are a one-sided supply of dwellings and a diminishing level of services. A bi-weekly food market is at present the neighbourhood’s strongest suit.
The Dwelling design studio ‘Charging Rotterdam!’ seeks to transform the heart of Tussendijken – a city park, a market square and a cultural centre – into an area that brings together different lifestyles and programs. How can the theme of the Creative City be adopted to enhance the social and economic position of the neighbourhood?
Students of the ‘Charging Rotterdam’ design studio will design a large residential building with additional functions. Focus of the project will be both the design of the individual dwellings and the design of the living environment.
All MSc 1&2 Dwelling students will take part in the Master Class Dwelling Design, taught by Prof. Dick van Gameren
MSc 1 Dwelling students are strongly encouraged to also enrol in Architectural Studies (AR1AD030) and Architectural Reflections (AR1AD040)
SEMINARS
The seminars Architectural Studies (AR1Ad030) and Architectural Reflections (AR1Ad040) are strongly connected to the design studio. It is recommended to enroll these courses, which focus on the analysis of relevant projects and texts thus providing tools for the design work in the studio. The research in the seminars is linked to the research programme of the chair and its publication series Delft Architectural Studies on Housing (DASH).
